Following a Sect

Question

I am a french muslim of 21 years old. In France there are many Islamic "sects" such as salafs, sufis, tablighs etc.

My question is that is it compulsory to follow a sect or can we simply be muslims?

Response

With regards to sects, the most important thing is the fact that sects are a later innovation by Muslims and have no concept in Islam whatsoever. Therefore, Shariah does not require you to join a sect, and in fact it is highly desirable to not belong to a particular sect, rather just be identified by the name that Allah has given to us, which is Muslims.

My brother, we will be judged in the Hereafter according to our understanding of Quran and Sunnah and the effort we undertake to fulfill the commands. We will not be judged according to others' understanding of what Islam is. Therefore, it is incumbent upon all of us to understand Quran and Sunnah ourselves and live our lives according to that. Obviously, in the process of understanding it is highly recommended to seek out help of scholars and consider their arguments but your understanding should be based on an honest effort to find what Allah is saying to you and wants from you and not based on the scholar who presented that point of view. Therefore, my advice to you is to engage in the activity of understanding the Quran and feel free to ask for any help from me that you may require in this regard. Keep praying to Allah that He shows us the right path.
