Is Muhammad (pbuh) the Last Prophet?
Question
Does Quran mention that Holy Prophet is the last prophet? If yes, then in which surah is it mentioned? Secondly, is there a mention of a messiah in the Quran? If yes when will he come and will he be a prophet? Who will he be? And why do we believe so?
A lot of Muslims believe that the Messiah will be Jesus Christ (I dont know if it is mentioned in the Quran or not), but if that is so shouldn't Jesus Christ be the last prophet?
I read your question on if Quran supports coming of a new Prophet but I didn't really understand.
Response
Quran mentions that Muhammad (pbuh) is the last prophet in this verse:
The word 'خاتَم' used in this verse is the same as English word ‘seal’ used in the meaning of a closure. When one seals an envelope or an opening for instance, nothing can go in and nothing can come out. Similarly, no prophet will follow Muhammad (pbuh) and consequently, the book that was revealed to him has been permanently preserved for us to get guidance from.
My response to “Does Quran support coming of a new prophet” addresses this issue from a different angle. Even if God had not mentioned that Muhammad (pbuh) was the last prophet, we would still have to have a clear directive from the Quran in order to make it a part of our belief that another prophet will follow him. As an example, I have presented a few verses from Deuteronomy that prophesized so clearly about the coming of a new prophet that the words do not leave any doubt in the reader’s mind.
Quran does not mention the coming of any messiah either.
Your question of Jesus (pbuh) being the last prophet is valid only if we accept that he is going to come back. Given that Quran is silent on this issue, I do not think it can be a part of our belief.
