Why do you Consider Shias to be Correct?

Question

(The text posted by the questioner contained multiple questions, this response only contains one of the questions and the response.)

I happened to stumble across your website while searching for an article discussing the view of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) being made of God's Nur.

After reading your answer I decided to browse through the other questions you received. I can't help but ask:

Why do you consider a sect such as the shias correct?

As for the shiites, how can any group that ridicules and curses people which another group respect be considered a group on the right path?

Response

Before I answer your questions, I think there is a difference of philosophy in the different approaches that exist. One can base their approach on a scholar’s opinion, or one can try to investigate further and find out the basis on which they held a particular opinion. I must apprise you that, with the exception of transmission of sources of religion, there is no issue on which a difference of opinion does not exist between scholars. Then it becomes important that we investigate that difference of opinion and find its basis. A related issue is that when it comes to sources of knowledge other than the primary sources of Islam, there has never been a guarantee that every scholar was able to get all the information regarding an issue. If you would like, this aspect is rather easier to determine using the writings of the scholars.

Quran asks Muslims to not create divisions amongst themselves. Therefore, Muslims should not find ways of dividing themselves rather uniting themselves. Quran says:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ ...
And hold fast to God's bond altogether, and do not be divided … (Quran 3:103)

In addition, when I look at Muslims, there is no way I can make a claim that all of them are right or wrong. Even at the time of the Prophet (pbuh), there were various categories of Muslims, one of them even labeled as the hypocrites. Similarly, anyone who takes any sect and claims that it is the right one or the wrong one is, in my opinion, completely oblivious of the realities. Our faith or our salvation does not depend on the names we call ourselves, it depends on our belief in God, the Hereafter, and the actions we take. So it is possible that a person may call himself a Shi’ite and be completely on the right path, and someone may claim themselves to be of another sect and be completely wrong. It is the struggle for truth and, based on that, the beliefs that they establish that define them who they are in front of God.

As for the shiites, how can any group that ridicules and curses people which another group respect be considered a group on the right path?

I think it is inappropriate to believe that all Shi’ites do that and consequently all of them are guilty. Like I expressed before, all individuals are different, brought up differently and have different concepts. I find many ordinary Muslims ridiculing scholars and personalities who speak against their own beliefs, I do not see how they are any different or any less guilty. I cannot label anyone good or bad just because they are part of a group, although I do stress that we have to break these artificial boundaries and just claim to be Muslims since that is what Quran asks from us.

I must also add that I have no where said that shias, or any sect for that matter, is correct. The same reasoning that I used above applies conversely as well, i.e. no one can call all adherents of a sect to be correct just because they label themselves like that.
