IN THE NAME OF GOD, MOST GRACIOUS, EVER MERCIFUL

Interpretation of Yunus:54

Question

What does the 54th verse of Surah Yunus in the Quran mean to you?

Response

This verse addresses the rejectors of a Messenger of God and informs them of the Day of Judgment when they will be gathered together by the Almighty. There will be nothing that will be able to save them from the doom of Fire. This is because of their rejection of the Messenger as well as the Hereafter. To understand this verse, it would be helpful to read it in context, starting from the 45th verse.

Their feeling on the Day of Judgment is alluded by Quran in the 54th verse:

وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِكُلِّ نَفْسٍ ظَلَمَتْ مَا فِي الأَرْضِ لاَفْتَدَتْ بِهِ وَأَسَرُّواْ النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُاْ الْعَذَابَ وَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُم بِالْقِسْطِ وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ
And if every soul that did wrong had all that is in the earth it would seek to ransom itself therewith; and they will feel remorse within them when they will see the doom. And they will be judged with fairly and they will not be wronged. (Quran 10:54)

This is because in the life of this world, every soul is under a test to either pursue the path of God, find the truth and accept it as it comes one's way, or reject it because of worldly desires and lusts. Based on one's actions, they will be dealt with fairly by the Almighty on the Day of Judgment, and their fate shall be decided. If that fate happens to the be the Fire, then every soul that ends up in that Fire will go through similar emotions because of what they have done in this world, and most importantly, because of their rejection of truth. It is an awful torment indeed.
