Painting Images of Living Objects
Question
Is it ok to paint faces, humans, animals (without hanging on the wall) for art and design students?
Response
According to my understanding, which is much different from many scholars, making images that do not conflict with Islamic concepts are not prohibited in Islam. Prohibited images would for instance be those propagating polytheistic beliefs, those containing nudity, immodesty or sexuality, or those that would be considered impious otherwise and considered violating the limits of Islam. The same can be said of other arts, including photography, architecture and so forth.
Personally, I would think that perhaps it is preferrable to not paint images of living things just in order to play it safe, but it is very difficult for me to say that they are not allowed in Islam. I would suggest though that painting faces and images of revered personalities should be avoided since there is chance that that may lead to polytheistic beliefs. In my opinion, it would also be preferable that these paintings should be of such objects that neither the paintings nor the objects will become exalted in the eyes of the viewers. From your statement, it clearly seems that this is not going to be the case, therefore, I think you do not need to worry about this.
I derive this conclusion after looking at various ahadith of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), most of which I am not quoting to save the length of this response, and especially the following verse of the Quran:
In addition, the following report is found in Sahih Bukhari:
I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Apostle used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me.
Obviously dolls are toys that are similar to the images of human beings and the Prophet (pbuh) does not seem to have prohibited playing his wife with such objects. In addition, when prophet Solomon (pbuh) seems to have had Jinns working for him and create images, then it is difficult to assume that he may have done so against the principles of God's law.
