Why Not More Than One Creator?
Question
Why do you conclude that there is only one that is behind the creation of the Universe? Saying that there is not a reason to believe in more than one creator is not satisfactory. There is a reason. I know examples are then often given as to how we find a painter behind a painting and so on. But we know that behind a building there were many hands, it is not just the creation of "one". So, is there a better explanation?
Response
There are two prime reasons why there cannot be multiple gods. One has to do with what we can observe around us today. The other is based on the established historical facts.
As for the observation, the solar system works in complete harmony, a day following a night, summers following winters, clouds coming resulting in rain causing fruit to grow forth, and many such intricate systems, it is not possible to accept that there are multiple gods, each owning and managing his own share of the system. If that were the case, the system's harmony would be in jeopardy. The example that you have given of building, the truth of the matter is that it is really one person in the end who owns the entire architecture, design and construction of the building. He may give tasks to different people, but it is that one person who makes sure that all things fall into place. He makes sure that it is not the case that wires run towards one end while the bulbs are on the other, porch lights are not in the bedroom and marble not put in the garden and so forth, even though in the end, it may be different people who were given the specifications and completed their work. The reporting eventually goes to one person and ownership belongs to them too.
Taking the same analogy, I believe there is really only one creator, sustainer, protector, and owner of the Universe.
The second reason is that of historical fact - if we look at all the religions that have claimed to be from God, none of them have claimed to be from multiple gods. For instance, Christianity, Judaism, Islam and other religions in which God sent revelation to man, they all claim to be from one and only one God who created this universe. Whether we believe in these religions as true religions or not is a different fact, but we do not find a compelling reason as to why we should believe in multiple gods.
Given these two aspects, it would really be my imagination that would make me think there may be multiple gods - neither the system around me, nor any of the channels that trace back to God give the slightest hint of these. It is then logical to conclude that the two major sources of knowledge point back to one and only one God.
I would also like to add that these are only two of the main reasons. There are many more reasons why I believe there cannot be multiple gods but only these seemed most relevant to the current discussion.
