Does God Hate Non-Muslims?
Question
I work and live with a very diverse group of people with many different beliefs and often get into long discussions with them regarding religion. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Islam and its teaching is very basic and I would love to improve it so I too can effectively spread His word among these people.
My question is a very simple one and sprang from one of the debates I had with a Christian here. Does God hate the Jews, or any other person that He has created? The emphasis is on the word "hate" and the strength of that word. I do not think I was able to answer it satisfactorily. I would appreciate if you would shed some light on this.
Response
It is indeed true that people have their set of beliefs and they are usually not willing to compromise on their beliefs. As you go through my writings, you will find that I relate to it as having one’s loyalty with their beliefs versus with God. If loyalty is with God, then one is willing to forgo anything that they believe is not what God wants. And in their pursuit to figure out what God wants, they will try to be unbiased. You can read my generalization regarding people’s attitudes here.
God does not hate Jews, Christians or other non-Muslims. God has cursed those Jews, Christians, non-Muslims and even Muslims who knowingly reject the truth. It happened that during the time of the last messenger of God, Muhammad (pbuh), a number of Jews, Christians, polytheists and even those who called themselves Muslims knew that the message brought forth was a message from God, yet they did not accept it because of their mundane desires. At the same time, many non-Muslims who had submitted completely to God earned his pleasure. Of course, when one submits completely to God and they realize that a message different than theirs is from God, then they try to be the first ones to accept it.
This implies that even Muslims are not exempt and everyone, including Muslims, must strive to find the truth in an unbiased manner and live by it. If this effort requires one to change their beliefs, then they must do so. A study of Quran will show you that this is the basic spirit that Quran instill in an individual. And this teaching is not peculiar to Quran or Islam, it is put forth in the Old and New Testaments too. A study of bible reveals that God judges people based on their attitude towards Him, His messengers and His teachings.
I humbly request that you study the book of God, Quran, verse by verse irrespective of how slow your study be, and try to understand it. By going over it a few times, you will find ample evidence of what I say and once your beliefs are based on Quran, you will also be able to represent Islam correctly to non-Muslims.
